About David

With D-GaP Photos I’ve combined two of my loves – a love of photography and the great outdoors.

My interest in photography started when I was about eight years old when my late father built a darkroom in the back of our garage. I started learning how to process photographs before I even took one. Eventually I grabbed my Dad’s Leica and started snapping.

My father was (in the days before even 35mm photography) a photographer with the Christchurch Star, New Zealand and, especially in the early days, would help me with learning how to use the camera, composition and techniques. He was, till his passing, my harshest critic!

As for my love of the outdoors that didn’t really start until my 20s when I participated in the Outward Bound course in Anakiwi. Shortly after I joined the Waikato Tramping Club to continue my outdoor adventures.  After moving to Australia in 2001 I joined the Border Bushwalking Club in Albury/Wodonga. I have served on committees for the local club and State based Bushwalking Groups including on the executive committee for Bushwalking Australia.

Some of my favourite places are Kakadu National Park, Fraser Island, Kangaroo Island, Cradle Mountain, Lake Mungo, Wilson’s Promontory, the coast line of Western Australia and the Larapinta Trail (Western McDonald Ranges out of the Alice). I still have so much more I want to see and photograph.

I’m so proud and lucky to live in Albury. This is a special place that has the advantage of enjoying all four seasons. I get to spend winter playing in the snow with my grandkids in the Victorian Alps and summer canoeing down the majestic Murray River. Autumn in nearby Bright is spectacular, as are the wild flowers in spring in the hills surrounding us.

One of my favourite spots in this area is Mt Buffalo, as anyone that has visited me here in Albury has soon found out. I like to call it ‘my mountain’ and a lot of my photos have been taken there. It is so special I have even shared my mountain with 400 walkers from Bushwalking Victoria, literally weeks before bushfires devastated Cresta Valley. That is the beauty of Buffalo – it can go from Snow to Fire in a matter of weeks.

With age walking has become a lesser part of my life as I spend time with my wife, children and brilliant grandchildren. I’m also heavily involved with community work mainly via my Rotary Club, as well as a keen tennis player.

I would like to thank you for spending your time wandering through my precious moments and hope to see you back soon.

All the best

David
